Jung-Hye Roe
Chair of Board of Directors, Daegu-Gyungbook Instititute of Science and Technology (DGIST)
Jung-Hye Roe is currently the chair of the board of directors for Daegu-Gyungbook Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST). She is professor emeritus of biological sciences at Seoul National University (SNU) and a Kim Bojeong-Endowed Chaired Professor at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). She is a fellow of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology and a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology.
Her primary research interests include how environmental factors affect microbial gene expression and how microorganisms survive stressful conditions and achieve homeostasis. She has served on editorial boards of renowned microbiology journals such as Annual Review of Microbiology, Journal of Bacteriology by the American Society for Microbiology, Microbiology by the Society for General Microbiology in the United Kingdom and Molecular Microbiology. She has received various awards, including the Presidential Award for Korea Science (Biological Sciences) in 2011 and the Bichumi Award for Woman Leaders from the Samsung Foundation in 2012.
She helped establish the Research Integrity Committee in 2006 and the Diversity Council in 2016 at SNU, which promotes research ethics and values of diversity, equity and inclusion in Korea. She served as the President of the National Research Foundation of Korea from 2018-2021, the primary governmental funding agency for basic academic research.
She obtained her PhD in molecular biology from the University of Wisconsin in 1984. Since 1986, she has been a faculty member at SNU in the microbiology department.
