Jena is a cell biologist and chemist who has deepened understanding of cell secretion by discovering the porosome in cells.
In the mid-1990s, Jena used the Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) to discover the supramolecular secretory portal, the porosome. Jena has contributed to our understanding of the regulated transport of water through the bidirectional water-transporting aquaporin channel in cells. His laboratory helped optimise the nanoscale imaging of cellular structures using the AFM, which led to the discovery of the porosome.
Jena has received many recognitions for his scientific contributions, among them the Distinguished Scientist Award from the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine; elected foreign member of the Georgian National Academy of Science; American Association for the Advancement of Science fellow; elected foreign member of the Korea Academy of Science & Technology; elected foreign member of the National Academy of Medicine, Romania; elected to the European Union Academy of Science; the Swebelius Cancer Research Award; the Hallim Distinguished Award Lecture jointly with Ahmed H. Zewail; Sir. Aaron Klug Award; American Society of Animal Science Basic Biological Science award; Ranbaxy Basic Research in Medical Sciences award; George E. Palade Gold Medal; elected to the Academy of Scholars at Wayne State University; six honorary doctorates including jointly with George E. Palade and Günter Blobel and distinguished visiting professorships at leading institutions.
