Sung-Chul Shin

Sung-Chul Shin is an internationally renowned scientist in the field of nanomagnetism and an innovative leader in higher education. He is the first alumnus president of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology.
Sung-Chul Shin is an internationally renowned scientist in the field of nanomagnetism and an innovative leader in higher education. Shin joined the Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST) faculty in 1989 and served as the 16th president from 2017-2021. Prior to becoming the president of KAIST, he became founding president of Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science & Technology in 2011, when it changed from a research institute to university.
Shin is the author of nearly 300 journal papers, holds 37 patents and has delivered about 400 lectures. He holds academy fellowships with the American Physical Society (APS) and the Korean Academy of Science and Technology (KAST). He served as the president of the Korean Physical Society and the Korean Magnetics Society. He has received numerous awards including ‘Supreme Scientists Award of Korea’ conferred by the President of Korea.
An enthusiastic advocator of science and technology as well as an innovator in higher education, Shin served as the chair of various government committees including the Presidential Advisory Council on Science & Technology, advising the President of Korea. Recently, the President of Korea appointed him as Ambassador for Science and Technology.
