Ada Yonath received the Nobel Prize for mapping the structure of the ribosome. She is director of the Kimmelman Centre for Biomolecular Structure at the Weizmann Institute.
Ada Yonath focuses on protein biosynthesis and antibiotics paralysing it. She graduated from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, earned her PhD from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel and completed postdoctoral studies at Carnegie Mellon University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States.
In the 1970s she established the first structural biology laboratory in Israel. She is currently the director of the Kimmelman Centre for Biomolecular Structure at the Weizmann Institute. She previously also headed the Max Planck research unit for ribosome structure in Hamburg, Germany.
Among others, she is a member of US National Academy of Sciences, the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the Pontifical Academy of Sciences (Vatican). She holds honorary doctorates from over 20 universities and her awards include the Israel Prize, the Linus Pauling Gold Medal, the Wolf Prize, the Albert Einstein World Award for Excellence, the Erice Peace Prize and the 2009 Nobel Prize for Chemistry.
